The Process

The Process of Coming to Canada as a Foreign Worker

Many Canadian employers look to fill critical labour shortages from outside of Canada.

These employers apply for permission to hire foreign workers either temporarily or to support their permanent residence applications or both. They can do this in a number of ways.

They include applying to an office of the federal government called Service Canada for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). LMIA’s are issued to Canadian companies who demonstrate that the hiring of a foreign worker will not have a negative effect on Canada’s labour market.

There are also numerous LMIA exempt programs that allow foreign workers to enter Canada.

In most cases, a person who is neither Canadian nor a permanent resident of Canada will require a job offer from a Canadian employer as a prerequisite to being issued a work permit to legally work in Canada.

In some cases, an employer may assist you with travel and accommodation arrangements. In other cases, you will be expected to make these arrangements on your own.
